The practice of chöd (literally ‘cutting through’) skillfully combines elements from both sutra and tantra. Besides using mahayana methods for generating compassion and cultivating wisdom, chöd has the distinctive feature of visualizing the offering of one’s body as a tantric feast. Completely severing spiritual hindrances, it is designed to quickly bring about realization.

Chöd comes from the Shije or Pacification Lineage that was brought to Tibet around the twelfth century by the Indian teacher Padampa Sangye. However it was the Tibetan woman Machig Labdrön, a disciple of Padampa Sangye, who originated this particular form of the practice.

Lama Tashi Topgyal guided students in how to engage in chöd based on the sadhana composed by Terchen Barway Dorje.

This teaching was given at KPL on December 7-8, 2013.
